With the tragic death of his brother, Medgar, Charles assumed the post as head of the NAACP in Mississippi over the objections of Roy Wilkins. Hall began her stage career on Broadway in 1921 in Shuffle Along.  She went on to appear in a number of similar black musical shows, including Running Wild, Chocolate Kiddies, My Magnolia and Desires of 1927, an American tour.  That same year she recorded Creole Love Call and The Blues I Love to Sing (with Duke Ellington and his orchestra).  The latter song was a huge hit, catapulting both Hall and Ellington to national prominence.

The following year, Hall appeared with Bill "Bojangles" Robinson in Blackbirds of 1928.  The show became the most successful all-black revue ever staged on Broadway at that time and made Hall and Robinson household names.  It was this revue that made her name both in the US and in Europe when the show trveled to Paris to star at the Moulin Rouge in 1929. Her performance in it included the songs I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Baby; Diga Diga Doo, and I Must Have That Man, which continued to be audience favorites throughout her long career.

Hall married British sailor Bert Hicks who started a nightclub in Paris (La Grosse Pomme) for her.  After many years performing in the US and Europe, Hall went ot the UK in 1938 in order to assume a starring role in the musical version of Edgar Wallace's The Sun Never Sets at the Theatre Royal, Drury lane.  She was so successful and became so popular with British audiences that she stayed, becoming one of the most popular singers and entertainers of the time.  She resided in London from 1938 until her death.

Hall's career was an almost uninterrupted success.  She recorded over 70 records for Decca, had her own radio series (the first black artist to have a long-term contract with the BBC), and appeared on stage, in films, and in nightclubs (of which she owned her own in New York, London and Paris).  In the 1940s, and especially during WWII, she was hugely popular with both civilian and ENSA audiences, and became one of the highest paid entertainers in the country (despite the destruction of a London nightclub owned by her and her husband - the Florida Club). Around this time, Hall enjoyed a cameo appearance as a singer in the 1940 Oscar-winning film The Thief of Bagdad (co-starring Conrad Veidt and Sabu).

During her extremely durable career (since 1991 she had the world record as the most enduring recording artist), she performed with major artists such as Ethel Waters, Josephine Baker, Louis Armstrong, Lena Horne, Cab Calloway and Hools Holland.  Mme. Hall appeared in the London run of Kiss Me, Kate, starred with Lena Horne in Jamaica on Broadway in 1957, and made two jazz recordings with Humphrey Lyttelton in 1969-70.  This was followed by theatre tours and concert appearances.  She sang at Duke Ellington's memorial service at St. Martin in the Fields in 1974, and presented a one-woman show at Carnegie Hall in 1988. her final US concert apperances took place in 1992 at Carnegie Hall, (Cabaret Comes to Carnegie series). Mme. Hall died at the age of ninety-two, a true icon of American musical theatre.

Vintage autograph album leaf (pale green) signed in blue fountain pen ink. Accompanied by a vintage 8"x10" sepia-tone silver gelatin silverprint formal image of the accomplished actor.   $ 125

Lee's film credits include Hitchcock's Lifeboat and Robert Rosen's Body and Soul. He was known for his dignified presence, a rare image for Black screen actors of the day. Born Lionel Cornelius Canegata in Harlem, he was the boyhood friend of Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, Jr.  He ran away from home at the age of 14 and, some four years later, took up the profession of prize fighting. He had a record 200 wins and 25 loses in the welterweight division. In his early 30s, Lee appeared in Mamba's Daughters, co-starring Ethel Waters. He met with difficult times when the Hollywood blacklist began keeping so-called radicals out of work. It is believed that Lee was barred from 40 productions by 1952.  The conservative movie industry would not consider him as "safe."  Said Lee, in a letter to Walter White of the NAACP (1952):  I can't take it anymore. I am going to get a shoeshine box and sit outside the Astor Theatre. My picture, Cry the Beloved Country, is playing to capacity audiences and, my God, I can't get one days work...  Lee died shortly before he was summoned to appear before the House Committee on Un-American Activities.

She continued as an actress in film in the 1940s, then moved to television in the 1950s. In her mid 60s she returned to school and received her undergraduate degree from Hunter College. He is best known today for his dancing with Shirley Temple in a series of films during the 1930s. At one time Robinson was the highest paid black performer in the United States.  Due to a series of ill-advised investments and lifestyle, the great vaudevillian died broke and penniless.  He was portrayed on screen by Gregory Hines in the film Bojangles.

The following year she was the lead singer of the Charleston in Runnin' Wild. Throughout the 1920s, she appeared in several black Broadway productions. During this time she also made a few recordings before relocating to England:  Doin' the New York Lowdown and Digga Digga Do as vocalist for the Irving Mills Hotsy Totsy Gang. While in Paris she appeared in a number of cabaret shows at the Moulin Rouge. She was then asked to return to New York where she replaced a singer in The New Yorkers where she sang Love for Sale. Awhile later, Ivor Novello offered her a part in Glamorous Nights, in which she sang Far Away in Shanty Town. Her last Broadway performances were Pippin (1973, London) and Black Broadway (1980). ROOSEVELT, ANNA ELEANOR (1884-1962) First Lady, United Nations representative, author, humanitarian.

Intriguing White House Typewritten Letter Signed, one page, September 1940, to an Austin, Texas wife of a State Representative regarding the adoption of a child. Accompanied by original envelope. Professionally double-matted along in taupe tones with a pearlized top board. Encased in museum conservation glass and complementary gilt-wood frame. The letter has been paired with a 5"x7" black and white, matte-finish image of Mrs. Roosevelt speaking before the United Nations.   $  695

Anna Eleanor Roosevelt was First Lady from 1933-45. She supported the New Deal policies of her husband, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and became an advocate for civil rights. After her husband's death in 1945, she continued to be an international speaker, author, politician and activist for the New Deal coalition.  She worked to enhance the status of working women, although she opposed the Equal Rights Amendment because she believed it would adversely affect women.

In the 1940s, Mrs. Roosevelt was one of the co-founders of Freedom House and supported the formation of the United Nations. She founded the UN Association of the US in 1943 to advance support for the formation of the UN.  She was a delegate to the UN General Assembly from 1945-52, a job for which she was appointed by President Harry S. Truman and confirmed by the US Senate. During her time at the UN, Mrs. Roosevelt chaired the committee that drafted and approved the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  President Truman called her the First Lady of the World in tribute to her human rights achievements. In 1999, Mrs. Roosevelt was ranked in the top ten of Gallup's List of Most Widely Admired People.

I am sending you a naturalist diary -- sorry the year is almost half over. Perhaps you would enjoy looking at the images and taking some vicarious trips through the words." Accompanied by original, hand-addressed mailing envelope.   $ 125

Found inspiration from the Group of Seven. He was also interested in making abstract paintings of nature. It wasn't until the mid-1960s that he changed to his present style, realism.

CADMUS, PAUL   (1904-99)  American artist. He is best known for his paintings and drawings of nude male figures. His works combined elements of eroticism and social critique to produce a style often called magic realism. He painted with egg tempera.

CHRISTO (Christo Vladimirov Javacheff)  (1935 -   ) Environmental Installation Artist-duo with his wife Jeanne-Claude.

Signed color litho-print postcard Surrounded Islands, Biscayne Bay. Christo has signed on behalf of himself and Jeanne-Claude. Dimensions of card are 4"x6". Ideal for an oversized mat and frame. Fine condition.  $ 50

The work of Christo and Jeanne-Claude include the wrapping of the Reichstag in Berlin and the Pond Neuf Bridge in paris, the 24-mile long curtain called Running Fence in Marin and Sonoma counties in California and, most recently, The Gates in New York's Central Park. Although their work is visually impressive and often controversial as a result of its scale, the artists have repeatedly denied that their projects contain any deeper meaning than their immediate aesthetic. The purpose of their art, they contend, is simply to make the world a "more beautiful place" or to create a new way of seeing familiar landscapes. Art critic David Bourdon has described Christo's wrappings as a "revelation through concealment."

CRUIKSHANK, GEORGE  (1792-1878)  Celebrated British illustrator and caricaturist.

Choice signature boldly penned on a small card headed “autograph.” He has included his home address and dated it 1875, three years before his death. Professionally matted along with an original, vintage steel engraving of Cruikshank (over 100 years old). $ 200

Why Are Autograph Collectors?

FLAGG, JAMES MONTGOMERY (1877-1960)  American artist and illustrator.

Uncommon and desirable autograph sentiment signed “why are autograph collectors? James Montgomery Flagg”. A hilarious albeit sarcastic sentiment. Professionally matted together with a reprint of the famous Army recruitment poster. A wonderful gift for a career military person or Army recruiter!!   $ 295

His most famous poster was created in 1917 to encourage recruitment in the United States Army during World War I. (Uncle Sam pointing at the viewer) (inspired by a British recruitment poster showing Lord Kitchener in a similar pose) with the caption I Want YOU for U. S. Army. Over 4 million copies of the poster were printed during World War I, and it was revived for World War II. Flagg used his own face for that of Uncle Sam (adding age and the white goatee), he said later simply to avoid the trouble of arranging for a model.

American artist and illustrator. Worked in media ranging from fine art painting and cartooning but is best remembered for his propaganda posters (Uncle Sam Wants YOU).

HAUSNER, RUDOLF (1914-95) - Austrian painter, printmaker and sculptor.

Signed color litho print postcard of his 1955 painting Narrenhut (now in the Verlag Galerie Welz, Salzburg). Image is mounted with Mylar hinges to a larger, acid-free, artboard in siena tones, and further protected with a Mylar envelope. $ 75

Hausner has been described as a "psychic realist." Studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1931-36. In 1939 he was designated a "degenerate" artist and his work was banned in Germany, although he served in the German military from 1941-45. Before allying himself with and co-founding the Vienna School of Fantastic Realistic, his works were mainly Expressionist-influenced images of suburbs, still-lifes, and female models, most of which were destroyed. His art evidenced the ability to depict a subject in a realist style while simultaneously overturning the laws of one-point perspective. Hausner went on to serve as a guest professor at the Hochschule fur Bildenke Kunste in Hamburg. He also taught at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Among his students were Joseph Bramer, Friedrich Hechelmann, Gottfried Helnwein, Michael Engelhardt, and Siegried Goldberger. Haunser was awarded the Austrian State Prize for Painting in 1970.

PATERSON, JAMES  (1854-1932)  British landscape painter.

Seven line closing from a letter nicely signed. Accompanied by a small color print of one of his landscapes.  $ 35

He drew several accomplished portrait sketches of high-profile contemporaries. Paterson strongly believed in the "intimate study of nature's varied features" and in giving a real rather than idealised representation. "In comparison with drawing, as a means of penetrating and recording for oneself impressions...photography is of far inferior value."

PROCTOR, ADAM EDWIN  (1864-1913) British landscape and genre painter in oil and watercolor.

Two line closing from a letter, nicely signed. $ 15

Studied at the Lambeth and Westminster School of Art and Langham Life Classes.  Exhibited his work from 1882. He became a member of the R.B.A. from 1891 and a member of the R.I. from 1909.

ROCKWELL, NORMAN   (1894-1978)

Autograph Display consisting of an important-content Typewritten Letter Signed, one page, dated 1962, written on his personal letterhead. Quaint letter to a New York editor explaining that he is not a writer. Letter reads:  "Thank you for your letter but I am just no writer. If you want to pay the $500 to someone to put something together from my autobiography 'My Adventures as an Illustrator,' (published by Doubleday and Company) I would be delighted.  If you do use it please let me know when it is published. It would be fun to read it."  Professionally double-matted along with a 8"x10" black and white glossy vintage photograph of Rockwell sitting before a canvas of a Saturday Evening Post cover, brushes in hand. Encased in museum-grade conservation glass and an appropriate wooden frame. One of the nicest display pieces we have ever offered.  $ 495

20th-century American painter and illustrator. Rockwell's work enjoyed a broad popular appeal in the United States, where he was most famous for the cover illustrations of everyday life scenarios created for The Saturday Evening Post over more than four decades. Rockwell was commissioned to paint the portraits of Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon, as well as those of foreign figures, including Gamal Abdel Nasser and Jawaharlal nehru. One of his last works was a portrait of Judy Garland in 1969. A custodianship of Rockwell's paintings and drawings was established with Rockwell's help and is located near his home in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.

Rockwell was prolific and produced over 4,000 original works, most of which have either been destroyed by fire or are in permanent collections.  He was also commissioned to illustrate over 40 books. Rockwell's work was dismissed by serious art critics in his lifetime.  Many of his works appear overly sweet in modern critics' eyes, especially the Saturday Evening Post covers, which tend toward idealistic or sentimentalized portrayals of American life -- this has led to the often-deprecatory adjective "Rockwellesque." Nevertheless, in later years, Rockwell began to receive more attention as a painter when he chose more serious subjects such as the series on racism for Look magazine. One example of this more serious work is The Problem we All Live With, that dealt with the issue of school racial integration.  The painting depicts a young African-American girl, Ruby Bridges, flanked by white federal marshall's, walking to school past a wall defaced by racist graffiti. In 1999, The New Yorker art critic Peter Schjeldahl said of Rockwell in ArtNews: "Rockwell is terrific. It's become too tedious to pretend he isn't."

At age 77, Sabin was paralyzed for three months by polyneuritis, thus interrupting his research in Mexico on an aerosol measles vaccine.  He consulted with the National Institutes of Health on programs to vaccinate children in impoverished areas of the world (1984-86). American dancer and choreographer. Began her association with the American Ballet Theatre in 1939. Her first significant work, Rodeo (1942) with the score by Aaron Copland, was staged for the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. Although Ms. deMille continued to choreograph nearly up to the time of her death -- most of her later works have dropped out of the ballet repertoire. Besides Rodeo, two other deMille ballets are performed regularly: Three Virgins and a Devil, and Fall River Legend (based on the life of Lizzie Borden). Ms. deMille is credited with choreographing the musical Oklahoma. She went on to choreograph over a dozen musicals, most notably: Carousel, Brigadoon, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Paint Your Wagon, Goldilocks.

Ms. deMille's love of acting played an important role in her choreography. She revolutionized musical theatre by creating choreography which not only conveyed the emotional dimensions of the characters but also enhanced the plot. Her choreography, as a reflection of her awareness of acting, reflected the angst and turmoil of the characters instead of simply focusing on a dancer's physical technique. Mme. deMille founded the Agnes deMille Dance Theatre in 1953, later revised as Heritage Dance Theatre.
