OPERA GREATS
ANDERSON, MARIAN (1897-1993) African-American operatic contralto. One of the most celebrated singers of the 20th century.
Large, bold, vintage signature in fountain pen ink on a pale green autograph album leaf. Professionally matted in a rich hunter green suede matboard along with a Yousef Karsh black and white photographic print. Signature measures 5"x1.5" approximately. Image area is 3.75"x4.75". Overall display piece measures 9"x12.5". Ready for your own framing. $ 165

Most of Anderson's singing career was spent performing in concert and recital in major music venues and with major orchestras throughout the US and Europe between 1925-65. Although she was offered contracts to perform roles with many importand European opera companies, Anderson declned all of these, preferring to perform in concert and recital only.
She did, however, perform opera arias within her concerts and recitals. Mme. Anderson made many recordings that reflected her broad performance repertoire of everything from concert literature to lieder to opera to traditional American songs and spirituals. Anderson became an important figure in the struggle for black artists to overcome racial prejudice in the US during the mid twentieth century. In 1939, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) refused permission for Anderson to sing to an integrated audience in Constitution Hall. Their racial-driven refusal placed Anderson in the spotlight of international community on a level usually only found by high profile celebrities and politicians.
With the aid of President Franklin Roosevelt and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, Anderson performed a critically acclaimed open-air concert on Easter Sunday, April 9, 1939, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC., to a crowd of more than 75,000 people and a radio audience in the millions. She continued to break barriers for black artists in the US, becoming the first black person, American or otherwise, to perform at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City on January 7, 1955. Her performance as Ulrica in Giuseppe Verdi's Un ballo in maschera at the Met was the only time that she sang an opera role on stage.
Anderson also was an important symbol of grace and beauty during the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, singing at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedoms in 1963. She also worked for several years as a delegate to the United Nations Human Rights Committee and as a "goodwill ambassador" for the US Department of State.
The recipient of numerous awards and honors, Mme. Anderson was awarded the Presidentiall Medal of Freedom in 1963, the Kennedy Center Honors in 1978, the National Medal of Arts in 1986, and a Grammy for Lifetime Achievement in 1991.

ROYCROFT COMMUNITY - East Aurora, New York
A National Historic Landmark
From its humble beginnings in 1894 until its demise in 1938, the Roycroft Movement produced some of the finest hand-crafted books, furniture, lamps, metal work and pottery of the Arts & Crafts Movement. Roycroft's guiding force, ELBERT HUBBARD, was a visionary if not viewed by some as slightly eccentric given his abundant optimism and philosophy of work and self reliance.
Beginning his career as a salesman and part owner of the Larkin Soap Company in Buffalo, Hubbard went on to forge an empire in quality goods that were sold around the United States and Europe. One of his most productive ventures was the production of fine quality books and two magazines, The Philistine and Fra.
Sadly, on a return trip from Europe in 1915, Hubbard and his wife died with the sinking of the Lusitania. With his passing the community went into slow decline. Today, hundreds of thousands visit the Roycroft village in East Aurora, New York to dine in the Roycroft Inn or visit the gift shop and antiques emporium. President Millard Fillmore had a small house here as well. East Aurora is a trip well worth taking with many points of historic interest.
Weekes Autographs is pleased to offer several authentic autograph items of Elbert Hubbard -- from a typewritten and edited manuscrpt of Hubbard, to handwritten notes and letters -- all from the estate of a great niece. We have listed just one item from the many available. We welcome your inquiries on our Elbert Hubbard archive and hope you will make it a point to visit historic East Auroa, NY.

One of his last films, "I, Pierre Riviere, having slit the throats of my mother, my sister and my father," was based on a 1835 crime by a young peasant. In the film, Allio brought the rural world to life through the villagers' eyes. Movies, Allio once said, "are paintings that move."
Allio helped to design theaters in the Paris region and, with architects, helped to conceive the interior of the zoology gallery in the Natural History Museum of Paris. In theatre, Allio worked at the Comedie Francaise, the Paris Opera, the La Scala Opera in Milan and the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in London.

Black love, provide the adequate electric
for what is lapsed and lenient in us now.
Rouse us from blur. Call us.
Call adequately the postponed corner brother.
And call our man in the pin-stripe suiting and restore
him to his ambler logic; to his people.
Call to the shattered sister and repair her
in her difficult hour, narrow her fever.
Call to the Elders --
our customary grace and further sun
loved in the Long-ago, loathed in the Lately;
a luxury of languish and of rust.
Appraise, assess our Workers in the Wild, lest they
descend to malformation and to undertow.
Black love, define and escort our young,
be means and redemption, discipline.
Nourish our children -- proud, strong
little men upright-easy:
quick
flexed
little stern-warm historywomen. . . .
I see them in Ghana, Kenya, in the city of Dar-es-
Salaam, in Kalamazoo, the Mount Bayou, in Chicago.
Lovely loving children
with long soft eyes.
Black love, prepare us all for interruptions;
assaults, unwanted pauses; furnish for leavings and
for losses.
Just come out Blackly glowing!
On the ledges -- in the lattices -- against the failing
light of
candles that stutter,
and in the chop and challenge of our apprehension -
be
the Always wonderful of this world.
