STEBER, Eleanor (1914-1990) American operatic soprano. Studied at the New England Conservatory of Music and, later, under Alberto Bimboni. She was quite versatile, singing Wagner, Alban Berg, some French opera, the world premiere of the American opera Vanessa by Samuel Barber and a number of Metropolitan Opera premieres, including Strauss’s Arabella, Mozart’s Die Entführung aus dem Serail (The Abduction from the Seraglio), and Berg's Wozzeck. Of somewhat erratic temperament, Mesdame Steber could indulge in life’s pleasures, and gradually developed a reputation for hard-living; some would argue that her lifestyle took a toll on her voice, and indeed on occasion she could plainly be over-tired and out of form. Nevertheless no survey of American opera singing is complete without serious attention to Eleanor Steber. Autograph Letter Signed, two pages (two sides of fold-over note) 1939, Boston, addressed to Mr. Bimboni, thanking him for granting her an audition and expressing the hope they will collaborate again. Good content. Fine. $95 (Payment Options)

Made her operatic debut in 1935. She joined the Metropolitan Opera in 1940. Considered something of a Puccini specialist. Of Albanese, one reviewer described her as “…a splendid former prima donna of the Italian repertoire, remembered by old-timers as the frailest Mimi, the tenderest Butterfly, and perhaps the most haunting of modern Violettas." Vintage Metropolitan Opera program very boldly signed on the cover, in very good condition. In character as Violetta in LaTraviata. Certainly Mme. Albanese’s most famous role. $40 (Payment Options)
