HEAD, Edith (1897-1981)
Return to Catalogue

Considered by many to be the most famous costume designer in the history of Hollywood cinema. She began her career as a language teacher in Hollywood, eventually bluffing her way into Paramount’s wardrobe department. She went on to become the head designer at Paramount in 1938 where she remained for the next 30 years. Edith Head was nominated for 40 Academy Awards for her brilliant design. Head became a hugely successful, albeit, strong-willed woman in an industry dominated by mostly by men. Typewritten Letter Signed, one page, November 1975, on Universal City Studios letterhead. Thanking a friend for an invite to an exhibit and stating she will try to attend. Bears a HUGE signature nearly 3.5”x4”. No faint-hearted dame that Head! Accompanied by a 8”x10” black and white vintage reproduction glossy of Head in hallmark dark glasses, holding a black cat. Very eerie but interesting shot. $ 175
