African-American poet, novelist, playwright, short story writer and newspaper columnist. He is, perhaps, best known for his literary achievements during the Harlem Renaissance. Published by Alfred Knopf in 1945 (7th printing) Hardcover and jacket 324 pages. Dedicated and signed novel Not Without Laughter, 1930, Alfred A. Knopf. Book in very good to fine condition; hardcover with dust wrapper. Minor tearing to uncommon cover which has been professionally restored. Bears a wonderful, near-mint, fountain pen dedication thus: For Mrs. Cunningham, who has a wonderful memory for names. Sincerely, Langston Hughes. New York, July 17, 1945. According to our seller, Mrs. Cunningham was a good acquaintance of Hughes. A similarly dedicated/signed Langston Hughes book recently sold which read Inscribed especially for Mrs. Cunningham who helped me take these poems all over the South when tickets and trains had “gone to war.” $725
