O’CONNELL, William Henry Cardinal (1859-1944)
Return to Catalogue

Longtime archbishop of Boston and its first cardinal. Vintage 9”x7.5” sepia tone glossy photograph, 1926, being a Wide World newsphoto. O’Connell is seated with the Marquis Ferrante, Italian Consul in Boston, on the occasion of his being presented the Decoration of the Grand Cross of the Crown of Italy. This honor coincided with the jubilee of his episcopacy. (While a stalwart, tough-minded prelate, O’Connell’s career was somewhat tarnished by the appointment of a nephew to become the chancellor of the archdiocese. It was later learned that the nephew was secretly married! Tres scandalous in the 1920s!!). Photo in very good condition. Accompanied by a dedicated, signed and dated panel taken from a book. The pair would make for a wonderful display. $ 150
