SCHWEITZER, Dr. Albert (1895-1965)
Return to Catalogue

Physician, missionary, author, organist-composer, humanitarian, Nobel Peace Prize winner. Founded a hospital in Lambarene, French Equatorial Africa. Contemporaneously-referred to as the “Mother Teresa of Africa” in the mid 20th Century.
Autograph Letter Signed, one page, Lambarene, Gabon. Penned in French and dated December 23, 1951 on a 7”x5.5” note card to which the Schweitzer has penned his full address address. This charming note was written in response to a request for his autograph. A twelve-line handwritten letter to Andre Gualberto Perez of Buenos Aires, Argentina. In his day, Perez was considered one of the foremost autograph collectors in Argentina. Schweitzer acknowledges Perez’s letter of November and apologizes for the delay due to commitments in Europe and at the clinic in Gabon. Sends him best wishes for the New Year. Professionally double-matted and framed along with a handsome black and white, litho print portrait of Dr. Schweitzer as well as a postal first day commemorative cover, 1975, noting the centennial of Schweitzer’s birth. Handsomely matted in a rich nut-brown, leather-motif board, museum conservation glass, and a high-end, dark wood frame which is evocative of dark bamboo. Magnificent. The perfect gift for a physician, minister of music or pastor. $1,450
