WILDE, Oscar (1854-1900)
Return to Catalogue

Irish-born playwright and wit. A leading member of the “art for art’s sake movement.” This autograph display piece consists of a boldly penned autograph, circa 1895, along with a 1902 print from an 1882 drawing by J.E. Kelly and a set of four, mint, Irish commemorative stamps. The ensemble is professionally matted in a rich burgundy silk over boards, encased in TruVue museum conservation glass, and a high-end, gilt wood frame. The overall size is approximately 16.5x18 with a distinctly Victorian appearance. Not only is the signed sheet a bold example, but Wilde has added his hotel address at the time.
This autograph has associative historical value! In the 1895 cross-examination testimony of Wilde in his libel suit against the Marquis of Queensberry, Wilde testified that this was his Parisian address! "...I did not suggest to Atkins that he should go as my secretary--ridiculous, it's childish to ask such a thing. I took him to the same rooms I occupied in the hotel--29 Boulevard des Capucines. I engaged three bedrooms, having one in reserve. They all three opened on to each other..." The small slip of laid paper bears his name and his handwritten address. One can only surmise to whom Wilde handed this sheet of paper! A handsome and highly desirable piece which will be the center piece of any collection. The perfect gift for a writer, thespian, or professor of literature. $1,475
